PD, even the left wing of the party leaves Schlein: the farewell causes a sensation

Massimiliano Smeriglio leaves the Democratic Party. “I decided to make a difficult choice, consistent with my history and the positions taken in parliament, to leave the PD delegation and dedicate myself to strengthening an alliance for climate and social justice and a Europe subject to peace”, the announcement by the Dem MEP, which distances itself from the leadership of Elly Schlein. And in an interview with Manifesta he explains better the background to this choice: “There was a dialogue with Schlein, I think they had to do some checks, then nothing more. I don’t hide an important political difference, but in a large party this shouldn’t be a problem. There is an absence of usability determined by self-referential territorial logics. Always the same. I note, with disappointment, the indifference towards the work carried out and the embarrassment due to the battles fought. Mainly environmentalists and pacifists.”

“The theme is – stresses Smeriglio – how to rebuild credibility. In the democratic field there is a lack of discussion about the political, cultural and programmatic profile. A critical reflection on ten years of technical governments, of national unity, of everyone who governed with everyone and who brought about a profound change in the country by inflating the sails of the extreme right. For many, we are the elite and the right are the people, it is not just a question of perception. That is why, together with the European Green Party and the Left, I voted against returning to the old pre-pandemic Stability Pact that strangles people and local authorities.”

“I arrived in the Pd’s orbit, as an independent, with Piazza Grande, a movement that I coordinated and which accompanied Zingaretti to the secretariat. I accepted this challenge of changing the forms of political organization, shifting the axis to the left. Many people believed. That season ended badly, with Zingaretti’s incomprehensible resignation motivated by very harsh judgments about the irreformable nature of the Democratic Party, which was followed only by silence”, Smeriglio’s controversial comment about his now former party.
