Turetta, Tajani speaks: “I don’t agree but it is incorrect to expose the conversation to the public”

The conversation in prison between Filippo Turetta, the confessed killer of Giulia Cecchettin, and his father Nicola divided public opinion. “You did something, but you are not a mafioso, you are not someone who kills people, you had a moment of weakness. You are not a terrorist”: these are the words intercepted by the investigators’ bugs that triggered a wave of indignation. “I apologize for what I said to my son. I just told him a lot of nonsense. I never thought that femicide was a normal thing. They were meaningless phrases. I was afraid that Filippo would commit suicide”, declared, returning to his statements, the father of the 22-year-old in an interview with Corriere del Veneto. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, also spoke out on the subject.

“I do not agree with Mr. Turetta’s words, but it seems to me incorrect to disclose a conversation that is irrelevant from a procedural point of view and expose it to the public. I do not agree with a single word, but I also do not agree that this should be made known to the citizens as if this gentleman were guilty. He is a desperate father, the father of a confessed murderer who was trying to avoid another misfortune, such as suicide. These are unacceptable sentences, but they have nothing to do with the trial,” Tajani said.

“This does not mean justifying, we condemn what he said, but I do not see why it was necessary to publish the wiretaps. That is not what wiretaps should be used for. Wiretaps should be used to target crime, not to put private matters on the front page,” continued the leader of Forza Italia. Turetta “is a desperate father, with a son who absolutely confesses. I understand, I am a father and a grandfather. But exposing him to ridicule to look through the keyhole, we are the homeland of the law… If we intercept all Italian citizens and listen to what they say in the family we will become the country of Big Brother,” concluded Tajani.
