The meeting lasted more than an hour. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi at Palazzo Chigi this afternoon. The long conversation was centred around an in-depth discussion of Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness, which the government says contains several important ideas, including the need for a greater push for innovation, the demographic issue, the first criticisms of the supply of raw materials and the control of value chains and, more generally, the need for Europe to provide adequate tools to implement its ambitious strategies – from strengthening the defence industry to twin transitions – without excluding anything a priori, including the possibility of a new common debt.
These shared priorities also reflect the work carried out by the Italian government and the European institutions. Meloni and Draghi have agreed to maintain contact to continue to explore these issues in greater depth. In recent days, the Prime Minister, during a telephone conversation, invited the former President of the European Central Bank to the Italian government headquarters to discuss the report he has drawn up on the future of European competitiveness, which was presented yesterday in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. “As Mario Draghi rightly stressed in his report on European competitiveness, Europe’s ambitious environmental objectives must be accompanied by adequate investment and resources from a coherent plan, otherwise it will be inevitable that the energy and environmental transition will be at the expense of competitiveness and growth,” Meloni said this morning.
