General Roberto Vannacci’s suspension from the army for 11 months was confirmed, “with the resultant equal severance deduction and halving of salary.” The Lazio Regional Administrative Court actually rejected the request to suspend the measure taken by the Ministry of Defense in February. The disciplinary action was taken after an investigation was initiated against Vannacci, at the request of Minister Crosetto, due to the controversial content of his book “The World is Upside Down”.
“The principle of impartiality has been violated”
According to the army leaders, with the statements contained in the volume, the deputy elected from the ranks of the Union would actually violate the principle of neutrality of the armed forces. Vannacci was also investigated for inciting racial hatred for pages describing the general’s popularity and political career. The investigation was launched, including complaints from the Military Union and the Tripartite Defense association.
Giorgio Carta, the lawyer who assisted Vannacci regarding the TAR’s decision, announced the appeal as follows: “This last issue cannot be considered concluded, because an appeal will be made to the Council of State with a request to correct the decision and possibly bring it back if necessary.
