Some stories don’t end, they take a lot of turns and then come back. Like the photos that immortalize the visit to Tehran by the then president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Debora Serracchiani. In 2016, the representative of the Democratic Party traveled to the Iranian capital on an institutional mission to participate in the “Made in Italy Contract”. On that occasion, the Democrat had herself photographed with her head covered by the veil, as required by the law of Islamic theocracy. Conferences, meetings, visits to art venues, everywhere with their heads covered like Iranian women to avoid the hard fist of the Ayatollah’s regime. Images that go against today’s statements following the arrest of journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran, detained in Evin prison. In fact, cries of disdain are raised from the Democratic Party for the treatment reserved for the reporter and podcast author, while in the past important exponents of that party bowed their heads to Islamic law and the dictatorship in Tehran.
“Putting on the veil is the biggest joke in history”, “you are mocking the rights of Italian women and civilized countries”, are some of the comments that colored Serracchiani’s institutional photos at the time. However, she is not the only one from the progressive area to cover her head in Iran. In 2017, the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Renzian Federica Mogherini, was in Tehran, together with delegations from 70 countries around the world, for the inauguration ceremony of the reconfirmed Iranian president Hassan Rouhani. On that occasion, she appeared at the ceremony and press conference wearing a veil.
