Stefano Massini artistic director of the Teatro della Toscana: the “coup” of the mayor Pd

Writer Stefano Massini is the new artistic director of Teatro della Toscana. A regular guest at Piazzapulita on La7, Massini takes the place of Stefano Accorsi, who held the role until 2023, but whose contract was not renewed due to issues relating to an expenditure review. The choice of Mayor of Florence Sara Funaro (Pd) was defined by many as a “coup” after the morning meeting of the Board of Directors today, January 11, organized at the last moment after months of request and with an attached press conference. called immediately without streaming. Why coup? Because it was taken in disagreement with the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture through Antonia Ida Fontana, member of the theater board, who had proposed the actor and theater director Edoardo Sylos Labini.

We remember that Mic is the main contributor to theater in Tuscany, and the first citizen Sara Funaro, the mayor as she likes to be called, did not share the Government’s proposal and choice. The Ministry of Culture supported the name of Sylos Labini after evaluating the latter’s proposal regarding his project to make the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, city of Dante Alighieri, a bastion of “Italianity” and the protection of the Italian language, with a broad national scope. A project that, based on Massini’s monologue at the press conference, does not seem to be part of the future of Pergola’s new artistic director, apparently more focused on the city of Florence and not the Italian nation. This is despite the Teatro della Toscana officially boasting the status of national theater.

The choice not to follow the ministry’s recommendation has caused a lot of discontent, due to the fear that Mic may review the financing of Teatro della Toscana. An eventuality that could also harm the president of the region, Eugenio Giani, profusely thanked at the press conference, whose electoral campaign for re-election could suffer considerable damage to his image due to the possible loss of the Theater’s “national” status. Are we sure that Eugenio Giani is satisfied with the mayor’s choice?
