The cabinet is allocating 175 million euros extra for the single energy allowance of 800 euros for people with a low income. Many municipalities are reluctant to pay because they are afraid that they will run out of money. Minister Schouten thinks they will now give up their hesitations about poverty reduction policy.
The government has so far reserved 679 million euros for the single person’s allowance for households with an income that does not exceed 120% of the social minimum. This amount will be increased to EUR 854 million. This amount will be divided among the municipalities in May.
In a letter to the House of Representatives, Schouten writes that he wants to prevent the proper implementation of the program that should absorb the effects of rising energy prices for people with a low income. He has received signals that some municipalities are choosing to reduce the target group or to pay a lower amount.
