The number of children placed out of home because of the social assistance scandal has risen to 1,675 since 2015. This was announced on Wednesday, according to new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) collected at the request of the Ministry of Justice and Security.
CBS reported in October that 1,115 children have been abducted from families known to be victims of the aid scandal. These figures were for the period from 2015 to 2020. From 2021, detention schemes will now be added.
Of the 1,675 children displaced since 2015, 555 were still not living with their parents or guardians at the end of 2021.
The CBS figures are an approximation of the actual number of children of disadvantaged parents who have been removed from their homes. For this purpose, the statistical office uses data on youth protection and youth assistance during residence. Statistics Netherlands does not have data on detainees on court order. Statistics Netherlands consults data from the Tax and Customs Administration to get a picture of the parents and victims of their children.
The investigation into the reason for the deportations is still ongoing.
The statistics office cannot say whether the evictions were a direct result of the welfare scandal. “The released figures give no indication of a possible link between detention and the welfare scandal. CBS has not investigated the reasons for detention.” However, Statistics Netherlands is conducting a study that aims to answer these questions.
Children placed out of home are placed in a foster family or institution. A special support team has been active since April 4, in which the municipalities and youth organizations involved support and guide families in possible family reunification.
On Thursday, the Assembly will meet with the cabinet of the children of concerned parents who have been removed from their homes.
