Efforts are being made today to move people to other parts of the country. That’s what buses are for. But that is not easy, says Milo Schoenmaker, chairman of the COA. NOS Radio 1 NewsI
“Structural shelter for at least 200 people”
“There are places where a hundred people can stay for a short time, but then you have to look for another place. This is improvised. We are looking for places where 200 to 300 people can stay longer. Duration is supported,” says Schoenmaker.
According to the COA boss, there were also contacts with the ministry last night about the problem of refugee reception in Groningen. “We have also spoken with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.” Security zones are responsible for the situation around the asylum seekers’ centers. “But now they are very busy with the Ukrainians,” says Schoenmaker.
In the meantime, the number of people in the Ter Apel application center continues to increase. If a solution is not found quickly, the situation will become untenable, according to the COA. “We face problems every day.”
The Council for Refugees was very surprised by the situation in the application centre. A spokesperson said: “It’s really a new low that people have to sleep outside and wait at the fence for a while.”
The mayor of Groningen, Schuiling, spoke last month about ‘our Lampedusa’, referring to the Italian island known for the poor conditions where thousands of immigrants live on the island.
