‘The distance between citizens and the government has only increased during the corona period’

In times of Corona, the state distanced itself even more from the citizens. While many toll booths were closed, all kinds of measures were taken that greatly affected daily life. The National Ombudsman writes this to the House of Representatives in his 2021 annual report. He sees confidence in the government falling even further.

Van Zutphen has been warning for years about the distance between government and citizens. It has only grown over the past year due to various circumstances. This contributed not only to the corona virus, but also to the long-term establishment of a new cabinet.

As a result, “many of the necessary developments have been put on hold,” the mediator said. “Insufficient progress has been made with the childcare recovery operation and solving the gassing problem in Groningen and Drenthe.”

Dutch young generation

Van Zutphen points out that the number of “people who can no longer participate in society” will increase in 2021, partly due to health or financial problems. He fears that some of these people will fall into long-term poverty, which will lead to other problems, for example in the field of education and housing.

It calls for special attention for “a generation of young Dutch people who show solidarity but have no educational disadvantage, little chance of social evolution, high student debt and no chance of a clean house”. “They should not become a forgotten generation that has struggled for years with a disproportionate disadvantage.”
