Parents leave the House of Representatives angry about the VVD’s contribution to guardianship arrangements

Affected by the charity case, parents angrily walked away from the public gallery of the House of Representatives when VVD MP Ruud Verkuijlen spoke at the debate about the out-of-home placement. Verkuijlen spoke for the first time in the Assembly, after which it was customary for other deputies not to interrupt him.

MPs from the opposition parties were outraged that the VVD allowed someone to speak first in this sensitive debate. Under the leadership of this party, the credit scandal broke out. They asked Verkuijlen if he wanted to drop the unwritten rule, so that real consultation could take place.

But the MP was not prepared for that. “I want to stick with tradition,” said Verkuijlen. After that, dozens of parents ostentatiously left the stands. They found it ‘disrespectful’ not to ask questions to the VVD.

To trust

After Verkuijlen’s first speech, PS chairman Lilian Marijnissen noted that the discussion about placing children outside the home is mainly about the trust of parents in the government. “Does Mr Verkuijlen think that he has contributed to that confidence in this way?” rhetorically said.

“I am ashamed and apologize to the parents,” said BBB MP Caroline van der Plas, the next speaker.

re-evaluate

Figures from Statistics Netherlands showed yesterday that 1,675 children of disadvantaged parents have been evicted since 2015. At the moment, 555 children do not live at home.

The majority of the House of Representatives wants these questions to be reconsidered as soon as possible, on the basis that as many children as possible can return to their parents. The PVV wants this reassessment before July 1.

The ruling parties D66 and CDA also want 555 files to be processed as soon as possible, but do not want to give a time limit. “We must avoid making promises that we cannot keep and that would cause justified unrest,” said CDA deputy René Peters.

Opposition parties specifically targeted Prime Minister Rutte, who they believe was ultimately responsible for their pocket money and the problems of children placed outside the home. MP Pieter Omtzigt spoke of a “deviated rule of law”. “Does Prime Minister Rutte feel responsible? asked Lisa Westerveld of GroenLinks. “The cabinet should be ashamed,” said Khadija Arib, member of the Labor Party.
