The government will sincerely recognize that institutional racism is predominant in the tax and customs administration. Sources confirm that, following a report from RTL Nieuws, the cabinet has decided to do so on the recommendation of Minister Van Rij of Finance.
Last night it was announced that Van Rij wanted to acknowledge the abuses of the tax authorities, which also played a role in the aid scandal. The cabinet discussed the matter last week, but ministers were unable to reach an agreement. Today a decision was made, but Van Rij didn’t say much about it later.
He first wants to pass the i’s and the t’s before sending a letter to parliament early next week. This letter must also indicate the exact consequences of recognition for persons who have been entered on the fraud list by the tax authorities for incorrect reasons.
Legal implications
For example, research by consultancy firm PwC shows that non-Western people are subject to stricter controls. Also a donation to a mosque can put someone on the list of scammers. Van Rij previously described it as “shameful” and “discriminatory”, but the term “institutional racism” has yet to be used by the company. However, experts characterize the method as such.
According to insiders, it was first necessary to know whether the recognition would have major legal consequences. Van Rij said today that the racism of part of the tax authorities is not set up like that, it was about “role models who infiltrate the organization”. This is consistent with the definition of institutional racism used by the Human Rights Institute.
A fee
According to Van Rij, what happened to the tax authorities is “something more than real” of systematically excluding people on the basis of race or origin, which is punishable by law. He therefore believes that the recognition of institutional racism need not have additional legal implications.
He stressed that compensation will at least be given to the blacklisted and disadvantaged people. Van Rij would like to briefly explain what this compensation scheme will look like.
