PvdA and GroenLinks in open letter: join forces in the Senate

PvdA and GroenLinks must join forces and form a single faction in the Senate to realize left-wing ideals. This is stated by personalities from both sides in an open letter to de Volkskrant. Among them are Diederik Samsom, Bram van Ojik, Job Cohen, Jolande Sap and Wouter Bos.

On June 11, a PvdA congress will vote on a motion calling for the formation of a joint senatorial faction with GroenLinks, on the same day that the results of a binding referendum among GroenLinks members will be announced.

“Historical Momentum”

Elite figures speak in their open letters of a “historical momentum” and claim that the left in the Netherlands is at a “crossroads”. “Is it going on like this in a country where it has been at the forefront for years? Or does he prefer the hope of a strong alliance between the red and green forces that could provide the citizens with an indispensable alternative?” , they write.

For individuals, the red ideals of social security and equal opportunities must go hand in hand with the green ideals of a sustainable society and a fundamentally diverse economy. It takes courage to admit that the political fragmentation of the left is getting in the way.”

Next year, members of the Provincial Council will elect the Senate. “Let us therefore join forces and ideals in the Senate,” they say.

The parties have indicated that they will cooperate more intensively last year. GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver and PvdA colleague Attje Kuiken said on Monday that they hope that party members understand that they can achieve more with cooperation than alone. Last month, EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans and Amsterdam alderman Marjolein Moorman also spoke out in favor of more cooperation.
