Erkens says that Borssele plays an important role in innovation and knowledge retention about nuclear energy. The nuclear power plant must remain open for this, even after the previously planned closure in 2033. The VVD does not exclude the role of state shareholder in the power plant.
The cabinet must come up with concrete proposals in good time for the implementation of the coalition agreement. The new legislation required for this must be sent to the House of Representatives before the end of this year. The VVD also wants a public campaign about nuclear energy, nuclear waste and new power plants this year.
Because Borssele will remain open longer, additional storage must be provided for additional nuclear waste, as has recently been the case. Agreements with Finland and France are required unless permanent storage is available for new facilities in the Netherlands. Erkens recommends making this mandatory for new plant owners.
coalition agreement
In the coalition agreement, VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie agreed that the cabinet would “take the necessary steps” for the construction of the two new nuclear power plants. During this ministry, 5 billion euros were allocated.
Last month, the ruling CDA party had already submitted a nuclear acceleration plan. The party wants the cabinet to investigate the possibilities of ‘mini-plants’. MP Bontenbal thinks he will be able to participate in 2030.
