Gazprom stops gas supply to the Netherlands due to payment dispute

The Russian company Gazprom will stop gas deliveries to the Netherlands from today. This is reported by Gasterra, a gas trader of Shell, Esso Nederland and the Dutch state.

Gasterra does not want to respond to Gazprom’s payment requests. They are the result of a decree by Russian President Putin on payment in rubles. As a result, the Dutch company will not receive 2.0 billion m3 of gas from May 31 (tomorrow) to September 30, 2022. The company says it has anticipated this by purchasing gas elsewhere.

Gasterra gives two reasons for not meeting the payment obligations. The company that pays in rubles is in violation of EU sanctions against Russia. In addition, he has to open bank accounts in Moscow. These are subject to Russian law, according to Gasterra, which would be a huge risk.

“No results for households”

Minister Jetten (Climate and Energy) says he understands Gasterra’s decision not to comply with Gazprom’s payment requests. According to Jetten, this has no consequences for Dutch households.

Jetten does not expect any results for companies either. “The cabinet will continue to monitor the situation closely in the coming period,” said the minister.

Fill the gas reserves

A spokesperson for Gasterra says that the replenishment of the gas stocks is “in principle going according to plan”. Gasterra would not say how big the annual volume was or how much would be lost if the gas supply to Gazprom were to be stopped. The aim is to fully compensate for the 2.0 billion m3 lost by purchasing elsewhere.

The contract with Gazprom expires on October 1, nothing changes. A spokesperson said that the company already has a plan to cease operations and that the contract will not be renewed in this context.
