As far as we know, that never happened in the Senate: a session that couldn’t start because there were too few senators. But this afternoon it happened. A discussion about the rule of law was scheduled for 5:30 p.m., but later it turned out that there was no ‘quorum’ to begin with.
According to the convention, 38 members must have signed the participant list in order for a meeting to be valid. That is half of the total number of senators (75) plus 1. But President Jan Anthonie Bruijn only had 35.
He apologized to the ministers
He adjourned the meeting twice, but decided to postpone the whole discussion until 9am tomorrow morning, as there were very few members left at 7pm. He apologized to the three ministers (Yeşilgöz, Weerwind and Uslu) who were always waiting in vain.
According to a Senate spokesperson, President Bruijn will talk to the group leaders tomorrow.
It was remarkable that during the debate among the senators one of the speakers was announced: Theo Hiddema (Frentrop faction, ex-Forum for Democracy) would give his first speech as deputy. We don’t know why it isn’t there.
