Where does the coalition stand in the nitrogen plans and what is the legal situation?

The rock in the pool was long gone, but the nitrogen injections into the cabin aren’t making any less ripple. Farmers fear to survive and three of the four coalition parties have been criticized in recent days.

This begs the question of how ambitious plans and goals will end. Will they continue completely or will they weaken in the near future?

In short, the government’s plans mean that emissions must be reduced by 70% in 131 areas near vulnerable nature reserves and by 12% in other areas.

The idea is that provinces should develop these goals because they know the area. This must be done before 1 July next year. Provinces can take measures for industry, construction and traffic. But the greatest sacrifice will be required of the cattle. Obviously, not all farms will survive.

Cancellations and angry phone calls

Coalition parties VVD, CDA and ChristenUnie received criticism from their supporters last weekend. The cancellations led to angry phone calls from the provincial executive and the VVD congress rejected the plan on Saturday to the dismay of party leaders.

The issues were gathered yesterday in the Assembly, where the groups gathered. CDA party chairman Heerma attracted attention with his harsh words. He said adjustments had to be made in “key points” because the plans were “out of reach”.

But what needs to be adjusted remains unclear. Heerma argued for innovation and privatization by the state. Both are already in the plans of the cabinet, but Heerma has at least defended his supporters with harsh words.

Distribution

CDA does not want to change the objectives. There is not one coalition party. Paternotte, the head of the D66 party (the only one who was not a notable peasant supporter), also drew attention to this. “I fully understand that these are difficult political choices, but I don’t think anyone wants to change the deals.”

However, the VVD faces a dilemma. MP Van Campen emphasized that he wanted to stick to the reduction targets and also take into account the criticism of the members (who argued for the regulation). “This is a very difficult task,” he admitted.
