Another delay
For Lelystad, the cabinet decision means another postponement. It was traditionally a small regional airport and the idea was to turn it into an airport that could handle tens of thousands of flights from Schiphol.
The expansion was given the green light in 2015. According to the initial plans, Lelystad Airport should have been ready in 2018, but this has been repeatedly postponed. Local residents and environmental organizations resisted and tried to block the expansion and opening through legal action. They were afraid of noise pollution and damage to nature for local residents.
no license
Nitrogen issues have been added over the years. When the corona crisis broke out in early 2020, there were much fewer flights around the world and much less need to support flights from Schiphol.
In March of this year, Minister Van der Wal of Nature and Nitrogen decided not to grant Lelystad any nature permits for the time being, because the calculations for nitrogen emissions were incorrect.
