Costa welcomes Montenegro on Friday. New airport is on the agenda

The prime minister will receive on Friday in São Bento, the new leader of the PSD, the first meeting between the two who have on their agenda a possible agreement for the construction of the new airport in the Lisbon region.

The meeting between António Costa and Luís Montenegro is set to take place at 10 a.m., according to an Executive source.

At the end of May, Luís Montenegro was elected leader of the PSD with more than 72% of the vote, succeeding Rui Rio in office, and formally took office earlier this month.

In June, the Prime Minister said at a conference promoted by the Portuguese-Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Lisbon that the new airport solution for the Lisbon region will be made in consensus with the PSD.which justifies that it is a structuring process for different legislatures and that the actions of different governments will be conditioned.

At the end of that month, the Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos, published an order for an airport solution – Montijo plus Alcochete – and stated that he renounced the agreement of Luís Montenegro’s party.

But António Costa ordered the infrastructure minister to revoke that order, insisting that the solution for the new airport in the Lisbon region will have to be taken on the basis of an agreement with the PSD.

On Wednesday, the PSD leader said in an interview with CNN about the airport solution for the Lisbon region that will convey first-hand the position of the Social Democrats during the meeting with the Prime Minister.

“It is one thing to enter into a dialogue with the main opposition party, another is not to decide. It is the government and the prime minister who have to decide. It was very interesting to discuss the PSD’s opinion, but we have to the government opinion”, stated in this interview
