Turnout is historically low, why did so few vote? †

Participation in municipal elections has never been this low. Just over 50% of eligible voters voted. In 2018, the participation rate was still 54.5%. Minister Bruins Slot has announced that he has launched an investigation into the lowest turnout ever in municipal elections, but based on opinion polls by Ipsos, an answer may already be found to a number of questions about the low turnout.

For example, the majority of non-voters decided to do so a long time ago (23%). A significant proportion of non-voters would never do this (38%). A third of non-voters have decided to skip the election in the past week and a half.

Especially in the big cities people went to the polls less often. For example, the turnout in Rotterdam was 39% compared to almost 50% four years ago. Also in Almere less than 40% of the voters came.
