The appointed Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez, has announced that she will take up the challenge entrusted to her by the President-elect, Gustavo Petro, to lead the country’s energetic transition.
“I have appointed Irene Vélez as Minister of Mines and Energy. Philosopher from Unal with a PhD in Political Geography from Copenhagen. She is a woman with extensive experience in the environmental sector and who will be given the arduous task of leading the transition to a non-extractivist economy,” Gustavo Petro said on his social networks during the announcement.
Vélez pointed out that the appointment is a “huge challenge for her”.
“This recognition is not only for my career, but also for the communities that defend life, water, territory and health,” said the newly appointed minister.
He added: “We will promote the energy transition, intensive in knowledge, and we will take care of the care of the big house.”

In addition, Magdalena Governor Carlos Caicedo said: “The new minister will be given the enormous task of protecting our ecological resources and instructing the sector to prevent the looting and destruction of rivers and moors.”
For his part, the Senator of the U Party, José David Name, noted: “We will work hand in hand with the new mining company Irene Vélez for the development of this important sector.
