Mangia resigns as Malta coach after scandal: “He has never offended anyone’s dignity or sexual sphere” “

An official statement puts an end to the Maltese national team’s technical commissioner’s experience. There are three key passages in the note, one in particular: it reaffirms innocence and absolute strangeness to the facts, and it reinforces the concept by explaining that no objection has been raised in this regard by the federation itself. But the story remains obscure.

Devis Mangia has resigned as head of the Malta national team.

Devis eats he officially resigned as technical commissioner of the national team Malta. Shaken by the scandal over allegations of alleged sexual harassment (which he always rejected by denying harmful conduct), the Italian coach left the post and motivated the decision through an official note.

He had already been suspended from the role at the end of last September, when more reports reached the federation’s table about his attitudes and the relationship with the players that – according to what emerged – would have gone far beyond the sporting sphere. A recording that appeared on a television program and testimonies from players who allegedly denounced improper behavior fueled the case.

Now the choice that puts a firm point and closes with the recent past that remains hazy while waiting for the allegations, suspicions, infamous statements for men and sportsmen to finally be clarified.

Three key passages from Mangia’s communiqué: in the first, he reaffirms his innocence and absolute strangeness to the facts (“never behaved that could offend someone’s dignity or sexual sphere”) and reinforces the concept by explaining that no objection was made in this regard by the federation itself; in the second, he stated that he had presented his position and provided all the clarifications at the hearing with the commission; in the third it clarifies that this determination was reached because of the situation “unfortunate” who came to create risky “disturb the serenity of the Maltese Federation and affect the progress of the national team”.

Devis Mangia had joined the Malta bench in December 2019 and had a contract until 2023. In the last year in charge of the national team, he had 3 wins and 2 losses in 5 matches played between the League of Nations and friendlies.

Today I informed the Maltese Football Federation of my intention to resign as Technical Commissioner of the national team – reads the note from the coach -. I made this decision after long reflection. In the role of Technical Commissioner, I have always worked passionately in the interests of Maltese football and the national team. The milestones we have reached are the result of the hard work and dedication of many people who put football above all else.

It is regrettable that the situation that has arisen in recent weeks could disturb the serenity of the Maltese Federation and affect the progress of the national team. I would like to reiterate definitively that not only have I never behaved that would offend someone’s dignity or sexual sphere, but in fact not even the Maltese Federation has challenged me in this way.

However, I provided all necessary clarifications during my hearing. Anyway, aware of the delicacy of the circumstances and the importance of the games that the selection will have to face, I came to the painful decision to take a step back.

I wish the best of luck to the Maltese Federation and the national team and I am convinced that they will be able to continue to improve, based on the good work done over the last 3 years.
