National manager Louis van Gaal will not take Jasper Cillessen to the World Cup because he is out of form. “I don’t know if you can see the matches, but Cillessen has been out of shape for the past few weeks,” the national coach said at a press conference regarding the World Cup selection.
Van Gaal said that Memphis Depay’s election despite almost two months of injury actually contradicted his view. “He’s medically fit and I don’t think that’s a good thing. But he was very important, so I reserved a place for him. But I have to build it.”
Van Gaal has announced that Depay will start on the bench in his first World Cup game against Senegal on November 21, but can continue. According to the national manager, Vincent Janssen will likely replace Depay on offense.
Van Gaal began his press conference by saying that he would not answer questions about why players were or were not selected. He provided very detailed information on the process, with all players rated in scout meetings based on the four team characteristics. Van Gaal said this, along with the vision of the national coach, led to the selection.
The national coach said canceling dropouts this morning was “hard work”. “Also, I’ve had tears in my eyes with some players with whom you have a stronger bond. There are players who have been invited to almost every game and are not currently there. It’s okay with me because it’s a big blow for any player,” van Gaal said.
“It keeps the man in shape”
Van Gaal called the eleven players on the field, goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek called the two outside goalkeepers. Regarding the news that Cillessen had reacted angrily, Van Gaal said: “It is logical that he was disappointed. He is the most experienced goalkeeper and has always surrendered for me. Everyone reacts in their own way.”
The national coach has yet to say who will be the first goalkeeper at the World Cup: “Justin Bijlow? I don’t know, he might be the first goalkeeper. But it also depends on how you get in. And that also applies to Remko.” Pasveer and Andries Noppert. The only one who’s really fit is Noppert. But I don’t know how next week will be.”
Van Gaal, 71, who coached the Dutch national team during the World Cup, described him as “the greatest gift I’ve ever received in my life”. According to the national coach, Argentina, Brazil and France are the biggest favorites of the World Cup title.
But Van Gaal was also clear about his goal in Qatar: “We have a good chance of becoming world champions. Few coaches dare to say it, but I say it. My goal is to become world champion.”
“Negotiations with migrant workers are artificial”
It has been announced that the Dutch national team will meet with a group of twenty migrant workers on the field next Thursday, after training in Doha on Thursday. Van Gaal admitted that such a conversation might have been overscheduled.
“But how else can we solve it? The moment the stars start talking to the immigrants is already artificial. Because normally such a conversation never happens. But the fact that we want to do this says something about the idea of who lives.” KNVB. And this idea lives on in the group. That’s the point,” said the national coach.
“All we have to say now is rest,” continued Van Gaal, who preferred to focus on football in Qatar. “Actually, it’s against my principles that I don’t allow it.”
