Former striker John Carew, who also played for Roma, was sentenced to 14 months by the Oslo district court which, while recognizing extenuating circumstances, punished him for failing to pay taxes. Carew also suffered fine exceeding 50,000 euros.
The trial was long, Carew was defendant because evaded taxes in the period from 2014 to 2019. It was like this. However, the former player and his lawyer tried to prove that the escape was not intentional. The judge partially believed Carew, who, however, did not avoid the sentence of the Oslo court, which could have had a heavier hand against the footballer. Because if the judge didn’t believe him, if he assumed Carew had acted intentionally, he would have given him a higher sentence.

The lawyer for the former Aston Villa and Valencia player considers that this sentence, considering the route, represents a victory, these are the words of Berit Reiss-Andersen to e24: “The court concluded that he acted with gross negligence but not intentionally. We have always supported him and Carew made it clear he wanted to make amends.”
Carew’s guilty plea was decisive: “I know I should have understood better, but I didn’t. The most important thing for me to say is that I didn’t do anything on purpose.” The Norwegian’s advisor was also decisive, who admitted that he was not impeccable in the role.

The trial in Norway was very popular, due to the popularity of the former football player, who after leaving the business became an actor, even a successful one. O Oslo court convicted him of gross negligence and received a 25% sentence reduction thanks to the confession. The prosecutor initially believed that Carew had intentionally evaded taxes throughout, but this turned out not to be the case. Now the player and the lawyer will have to decide whether to appeal, before making it official they will have to read the sentence.
