Orange Women beat Denmark as Martens return to acting

Orange footballers beat Denmark in an exhibition match

Orange players won a practice match against Denmark. The situation at Zwolle was 2-0 thanks to goals from Dominique Janssen and Lineth Beerensteyn.

National coach Andries Jonker had made room for Lieke Martens in the main team. The 29-year-old Martens was last seen wearing the Dutch national team jersey on 17 July. He was later substituted in the European Championship match against Switzerland due to a foot injury.

He continued to struggle with injuries after that but joined the Orange roster for the first time on Sunday. “I hope I can start playing football again and enjoy the game because it is the best thing there is.”

a lot of talent

He was far from worried that in his absence the young talent would get a chance at Orange. “I think it’s healthy for very talented young girls to come and bring something extra. I see this as a very beautiful thing. I wanted that in the past.”

In the match against Denmark, Martens quickly showed himself again. The Paris Saint-Germain attacker got the first chance. He took aim and forced Danish goalkeeper Lene Christensen to the rescue.

Christensen was soon overtaken by Janssen. The defender caught the ball above his knee from Sherida Spitse’s free kick and saw his shot return to the far post.

A few Danish chances

The Netherlands had many opportunities to expand their lead in the first half, including Spitse. The Dutch captain’s free kick ended in the crossbar, after which a bet from Beerensteyn was not heavy enough to get Christensen in trouble.

Denmark could do little to counter this and only once got in front of Daphne van Domselaar’s castle.

After the break, Martens did not return to the field – as planned. The entry of Jill Baijings made the first threat in the second half. Your shot bounced. Two minutes later, Beerensteyn hit the target and doubled the lead.

With 15 minutes to go, Dutch goalkeeper Van Domselaar came into the game. He parried a free kick well and saw the rebound fly over the goal.

July 2023 World Cup

The match played against Costa Rica on Friday was also won 4-0. The Orange Women are using these duels to prepare for the Australia and New Zealand World Cup, which will not be held until July 2023.
