World Cup in Qatar 2022

All four teams are still battling to qualify in Group E with Spain practically certain of the Round of 16 but not the place and finishing first or second makes a big difference at this World Cup. Germany is last, but has its destiny in its hands, but also in that of Spain. It will be 90 minutes of fire tonight when Spain-Japan and Costa Rica-Germany take the field.

Spain leads this group with 4 points, Japan and Costa Rica follow with three. Then comes Germany in last with a point, but ready to overcome the cut. The Germans don’t want to leave in the group stage as they did in 2018. The situation is less complicated than it seems, although nobody is absolutely sure. Spain, due to the 7-0 victory over Costa Rica in the first round, protected itself from any kind of mockery, but the primacy of the group needs to be conquered. Japan spurned a great chance against Costa Rica and now have to score against Luis Enrique’s side, while Germany must win or they are out.

2022 World Cup Group E standings: who will make it to the round of 16

  1. Spain 4 (+7)
  2. Japan 3 (0)

  4. Germany 1 (-1)

Spain leader and undefeated with 4 points, one is enough to guarantee passage, three are needed for first place. Japan and Costa Rica with 3 points have a common goal, but different opponents. One point is for both. Germany, on the other hand, has an obligation to win.

  • Germany passes if… 1) they beat Costa Rica and Japan loses to Spain; 2) beat Costa Rica and Japan drew with Spain, scoring a goal less than the Germans.
