The world’s biggest sporting event reaches its climax on Sunday when Argentina and France meet in the World Cup final.
It’s Lionel Messi versus Kylian Mbappé in what looks to be a delicious showdown between two of the best teams in the tournament.
Argentina may have been beaten in their opening game against Saudi Arabia, but they bounced back brilliantly afterwards and Messi showed why he is considered the best player in the game.
Most eyes will be on these two superstars, but the men and women between them also turned heads during the tournament.
The Polish Szymon Marciniak will have the honor of refereeing the final this afternoon.
The 41-year-old was born in Plock and is a former amateur player. In 2011, he joined the FIFA roster and refereed several Champions League matches.
Surprisingly, he had to withdraw from refereeing at the last Euros due to heart problems 18 months ago.
Speaking of the illness, he said: “The last year and a half has been very difficult for me.
“I had tachycardia, that’s heart disease. At first it was very difficult for me and I had to stop judging.
“I missed the UEFA European Championship, it was a terrible feeling.
“Now life is coming back to me and I can’t stop smiling because it feels great.”
However, he has destroyed several people in the past. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was unimpressed with his performance as the Blues lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League by a handball goal.
He said: “When you play against Real Madrid, maybe you don’t expect everyone to have the guts.
“I felt the small decisions in the first game and also today. I didn’t see the goal but I’m really disappointed he didn’t go out and score himself. You have to be the boss, not leave the decision to someone in an armchair and isolated”.
