Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano “Amy” Martínez’s obscene gesture during the presentation of the Golden Glove trophy in front of a multi-million television audience stunned Gary Lineker.

Key to Argentina’s first World Cup victory since 1986, Aston Villa goalkeeper Martínez celebrated twice as he celebrated his country’s third World Cup title and won the Golden Glove award. It simply delivers the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

He kept three clean sheets during the tournament before his heroic strike in the final. He was also Argentina’s hero in their quarter-final victory over the Netherlands, saving two penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Theun Koopmeiners.

However, he didn’t celebrate in the most elegant way, making a vulgar gesture while standing on the podium.

The moment certainly surprised viewers at home and pundits, including BBC presenter Gary Lineker, who said: “No! Don’t do that Amy.”

This came after Argentina won the most dramatic final in history on penalties after Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick kept hosts France alive.

After 63 matches and an exciting month of events, Sunday’s final was the strangest of the first finals played in the Middle East and Arab world.

Lionel Messi arrived in Qatar to cap off a glittering career as he led Argentina to their third World Cup victory after an impressive 3-3 draw ended in a 4-2 victory on penalties against France.
