Warren Gatland will have to overcome the odds if he is to pick up where he left off and win the 2023 Six Nations Championship on his return to Wales.
Gatland won a Grand Slam in the latest Six Nations campaign in his first 12-year spell in charge of the national team in 2019. But the team he currently manages is completely at a disadvantage with bookmakers after a disappointing 2022 under Wayne Pivac. 🇧🇷
Wales finished fifth this year, beating only Scotland and losing at home to Italy, a result that put Pivac on the cusp of an autumn campaign marred by defeat to Georgia.
Gatland’s return has generated a much more positive outlook given their history of success in the Six Nations, but Wales are still 18/1 to win the tournament with some bookmakers. The lowest available odds are 14/1. Gatland’s odds of winning a fourth Grand Slam with Wales are 33/1.
That puts their expected final position at fourth, ahead of Scotland and Italy but well behind the others.
England, under new manager Steve Borthwick, are the 4/1 third favourites. France are only second favorites (6/4) despite being reigning Grand Slam champions, while world number one Ireland are the 5/4 favourites. Scotland is 20/1 and Italy 500/1.
Gatland’s first game is at home to the Irish on February 4th before traveling to Scotland on February 11th. They then face England in Cardiff on February 25th before traveling to Italy and France in March.
Six Nations odds for expected final ranking (based on average odds at time of writing)
1. Ireland (5/4)
2. France (6/4)
3. England (4/1)
4. Wales (1/16)
5. Scotland (1/20)
6. Italy (500/1)
