World Cup in Qatar 2022
A well-packaged forgery, a sensational mistake, a hacker’s fault, an act of cloying superficiality, or a tasteless slip-up? The tweet posted by the official account of FIFA World cup (and immediately deleted) generated hilarity and disappointment by the association between the accompanying message and the chosen photo. “Liked if you really enjoyed the #FIFAWorldCup”it was written in the original post that had generated comments in response, many of which refer back to the more classic error link that warns of the non-existence of the initial text.
Although it has been taken offline, some users managed to take a screenshot of it, proposing it again on the Net. What was so compromising and reprehensible about that? Certainly not the words, but the image: this is a Cristiano Ronaldo smiling in Portugal’s uniform moments before the start of a match in this edition of the World Cup.
That kick used most likely dates back to the match against Ghana or South Korea, the last the five-time Ballon d’Or started before ending up on the bench against Switzerland and Morocco (against which he took over the contest in progress). Why was this taken away? The player has a thumbs up in approval.
A surge, that message, which seems so grotesque to the point of disbelief and feeds the spontaneous question: did the account manager not realize what he did? He certainly did not excel in sensitivity and, perhaps in good faith, he did not immediately realize the consequences of that publication could only be interpreted in one way: a mockery, a crazy troll (as they say in the jargon) in relation to CR7 who came out of the Cup without glories, with a lot of controversy and deep disappointment for having failed where his eternal rival, Lionel Messi, succeeded.
“This is really mean,” wrote one user referring to the mysterious tweet. “They are making fun of Ronaldo” and again “how shameless”, “the person managing this account must be a Messi fan”. These are some of the messages in response to what fueled the chain reaction.
The former Barça player, now with PSG, raised the trophy to the heavens under the shining eyes of Emir Al-Thani, who placed the mantle (the bisht, traditional costume) of discord over him. All the spotlights focused on the rosary champion while his alter ego ended up in a shadowy cone, disappeared from the public debate, and can no longer be compared to the South American star as an eternal comparison that marked an era of international football. Seven to five for the Ballon d’Or, one to zero in World Cup titles… there’s no more history between Messi in triumph and CR7.
After the elimination, Ronaldo had shared a long note on social networks where he defended himself and his commitment pointing the finger at those who, on the other hand, should have been responsible for the turnaround in Portugal’s experience in Qatar. The failure in the Cup came after the player’s break with Manchester United, official departure and announced live in an interview given to journalist Piers Morgan.
CR7 is currently without a club, without a free agent, and has not yet decided on his next destination. He spent the last period training in the structures that Real Madrid made available to him, then flew to Dubai where – it is said – he could sign a thousand and one nights contract for Al-Nassr: 250 million euros for the next two seasons .
