Puss in Boots returns to the renegade cat with an existential outlook

“My character is strong, independent and conveys the ethos that a woman can teach a man to accept his vulnerability without being seen as a mistake,” actress Salma Hayek said in an interview with EFE.

The return of Puss in Boots, who became a worldwide phenomenon with the group shock 2 (2004) presents an existential aspect as its main innovation, fusing genres such as comedy and action with the treatment of “deep themes”.

“He talks about the importance of forgiveness, or surrounding ourselves with people we trust, in a form that adults and children can enjoy,” Hayek summarizes.

The Mexican translator, along with filmmaker Joel Crawford, explored his character’s “emotional contribution” to avoid cheesy or manipulative behavior and “allow the little ones watching the film to think for themselves.”

Banderas and Hayek once again work side-by-side in this film, which the Spaniard describes as “the highest good in life”, in his statements to EFE.

The harmony between the two actors, who have been friends for more than 20 years, is completed in the second part of the film, which made history in 2011 and is the first major Hollywood animation production to feature two Spanish personalities.

“The first movie helped to understand that the protagonists can have Spanish accents and the villains can be blonde and speak perfect English,” said Banderas.

The commitment to the Latino community in the United States is also reflected in this second volume, where all volumes are entirely in Spanish.

According to Hayek, this fact allowed them to “develop more freely”, improvise “real jokes”, and work from different parts of the world “because Banderas always knew how to react to jokes”.
