Tottenham also disappointed in FA Cup: ‘We have a lot of ups and downs’

In their league game against Leeds United (0-4 win), Tottenham Hotspur seemed to end a bad period on Saturday, but a painful FA Cup qualification by Middlesbrough followed on Tuesday evening. Manager Antonio Conte is disappointed that the Londoners have been invaluable again this season.

“This defeat should hurt everyone at Tottenham,” Conte said after the game at Riverside Stadium. “We had a good chance to reach the quarter-finals of an important tournament, but we missed it.”

No goals were scored after regular time, but the decision fell in the bottom of extra time. Josh Coburn cleared the ball to the right of the penalty area and scored a devastating goal as Middlesbrough eliminated Tottenham Hotspur after Manchester United (on penalties).

“When you play an away game against a Championship club in this tournament, you know it’s going to be difficult,” said Conte. “So we had to decide early about this match, but we didn’t succeed. He gave confidence to the opposition. I can only conclude that Middlesbrough was right.”

Again no prize for sick Tottenham

This is Tottenham’s fifth loss in their last eight official games. Most importantly, playing against Middlesbrough in the 81st minute, Steven Bergwijn’s team should make another season invaluable.

Tottenham were in the group stage of the Conference League and were knocked out by Chelsea in the League Cup semi-finals. Moreover, Londoners almost miss the European ticket for next season. The Spurs are currently in seventh place, three points behind fifth West Ham United.

“I can’t hide the truth, and that’s because we’ve had a lot of ups and downs,” Conte said, pointing out that he would be leaving last week. “It’s a problem, maybe it was the same before I came. For me there is only one way to do something and that is to keep working hard.”
