Iconic records turning 50 in 2023

Many albums are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Albums that have become iconic in the discography of great artists.

Among them is The Dark Side of the Moon, the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was released on March 1, 1973 and is over 40 minutes long. It contains 10 songs covering topics ranging from time to death. Breathe (In the Air), Time, Big Business in the Sky, Money, Us and them and Eclipse make up what is considered one of the most important albums in the music world.

Another album entering its fifth decade is David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane. The album, which was released on April 13 of the same year, is considered a continuation of the previous album, which also featured the singer’s alter ego Alien Ziggy Stardust. Critics even say that the character is a result of his visit to America, as the piece combines glam, jazz and cabaret tones. The Prettiest Star, The Jean Genie, Lady Grinning Soul, Time and Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?) are some of the songs in the material.

Another fact is the cover of the album, the emblematic image of Bowie appearing with a red and blue glow on photographer Brian Duffy’s face. The photo has become a pop culture icon and has been referenced countless times in films, inspiring various artists.

In the middle of a farewell tour, legendary British singer Elton John will celebrate fifty years in 2023 of one of his most memorable albums, Goodbye yellow brick road. The material is inspired by the singer’s childhood memories through Hollywood cinema. Besides the title song of the album, Bennie and the Jets, Sweet Paint Lady and Candle in the Wind are some of the songs on the album which consists of 17 compositions.

STONE. Other recording material is Houses of the Holy by the rock band Led Zeppelin. The album contains the classic sound of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page with influences from funk, folk and reggae. The controversial cover of nude girls climbing a hill was censored. No Quarter, D’er Maker, The Ocean, Over the Hills and Far Away are part of eight songs on the album.

Bob Marley, the legendary representative of reggae, is another artist who in 1973 presented a record that is remembered to this day. This is Catch the Fire with which the singer became internationally known. The album, which became the representative of the Jamaican genre, contained 9 songs such as “Concrete Jungle”, “No More Trouble”, “Slave Driver”, “Stir it up”, “400 Years”.

Among the bases of South America, the great personality of Brazilian music stands out. Tim Maia released his fourth eponymous studio album in 1973. The singer presented songs that have become classics with themes of heartbreak, longing and disappointment, some in Portuguese, others in English, including the songs Over Again, Réu Bekenn and Gostava Tanto de Voce.
