Erwin Koeman himself is sober. When asked what his appointment as assistant national coach had done to him, he dryly summed up what he would do. “I will guide Ronald and help the Dutch national team win. This is my job.”
And yet something really special. The two brothers, who will work as national trainers and co-national trainers, were presented by the KNVB on Monday. A long-awaited wish by Anne Koeman.
“He would always tell us, ‘It would be great if you both made the Dutch national team’. Well, that wish has come true,” says Erwin Koeman, who kicked off the start of EM 2024 in Germany on his brother’s stream.
European Championship 1988
When it comes to the Koeman brothers taking part in a European Championship in Germany, it’s something special. They also raced together in 1988, which led to the championship being won.
Although Erwin Koeman feels it will be a special date, he does not consider himself rich for 2024. “You shouldn’t rush. But it would be something very special.”
Before the start of the European Championship in Germany, the final round of the Nations League is on the agenda. “We’re going to play to win there, it’s that simple,” says elder Koeman.
‘good duet’
It’s not the first time Koeman will be working with his younger brother. They also formed a duo at Everton and Southampton. And that works well, says Erwin. “As characters, we are not on the same page. I’m known for being very easy with people, and I think that’s the case.”
In addition, Erwin, who has already reviewed the selections and prepared for the first European Championship qualifying match against France in months, says people have more respect for Ronald. “I watched all the matches of France at the World Cup in Qatar. We are ready! Nice challenge.”
Ronald Koeman was the national coach three years ago and still knows many players. This does not apply to Erwin. “I don’t know most of them. That’s why I find it very interesting,” says the brand-new assistant, looking back at the first entry of the election.
On March 24, the brothers will sit on the bench for the first time when the Netherlands will face France in the European Championship qualifiers.
