American Quinn Simmons won the third stage of the Tour of San Juan spectacularly. Just as the sprint teams lined up, a car jumped at the finish point of the track. And these sprinters were several meters behind.
It was windy at Autodrómo de Vilicum, where the 171 kilometer journey began. And that wind changed at each of the seventeen turns. Also, the course was a bit up and down.
Simmons (Trek) pedaled with 700 meters left and only Maximiliano Richeze reacted immediately. The 39-year-old Argentine, who expected to join a new team with Mark Cavendish but was disappointed and announced he would retire after San Juan, just missed his bike.
Richeze was just ahead of the sprinters, Sam Bennett was ahead. The Irish player is at the top of the standings, six seconds ahead of Fabio Jakobsen.
In retrospect, it turns out that the American planned his coup in advance at the last kilometer. “The first thing I did when I got up was look at the video my coach sent me with this exact finish. So I said to my roommate Mathias Vacek, ‘Take me to that spot on the track and I’ll take care of the rest.
It cannot be ruled out that the mighty Simmons also has a good chance of ranking. “Mwah, I was suspended for a few seconds in the first place. Antwan Tolhoek and Mathias Vacek are still at the same time. Well, we’ll see.”
From controversial to cute
Simmons – the former junior world champion – made a big impact when he entered the pro peloton, but lost a lot of goodwill when he got involved in a social media controversy where he used an emoji that was perceived as racist. He was even removed from the Trek-Segafredo team.
At the most recent Tour de France, Simmons gained huge sympathy by attacking hundreds of miles with a generous smile on his bearded face (whether or not). It didn’t bring him much success.
“I promised my team I will earn more this year,” Simmons concluded. “I didn’t win anything last year, so it’s already 100 percent better.”
