Eben Etzebet showed his impressive rugby IQ to overcome Joe Marler, while the South African side managed a brilliant score last weekend.

The incident took place during a Champions Cup match between Harlequins and Cell C Sharks in London. It has since become one of the most viewed rugby videos on TikTok this week, racking up nearly a million views in three days.

In what has become a major feature of the modern game, Harlequins would form a crawl at the back of the ruck, with scrum-half Danny Ker moving the ball back through the defending players’ legs.

Marler was in the back, his hand resting on Wilco Luu’s tight headrest. As Kere prepared to box, Etzebet walked around the court and stole the ball from England’s number nine, protesting to referee Nika Amashukeli.

However, the whistle did not sound and all 6ft 8 in 18 Springboks made a solo attack on whitewash to complete a rather bizarre score.

The South African block managed to steal simply because Marler lost contact with his arm. His hand was only placed on Luu’s back, and he had to be tied by the shoulder, so technically speaking, the ball went out.

You can watch the video below.

In classic Marler style, he shot Etzebeth during the match. In a similar scenario with the caterpillar, Marler pushed the man in front and pointed to his shoulder and then to Etzebeth, speaking to the big Springbok, who laughed and smiled back.

The game ended 39-29 in favor of the Harlequins, with the English side securing a knockout match against the DHL Stormers. Despite the defeat, Sharks finished third in Group A and will face Munster in the Round of 16.
