“It has opened the doors”: Director of Team Medellín to Nairo Quintana

José Julián Velasques, ‘El Chivo’, sports director of Team Medellín, a Continental Pro formation where Miguel Ángel ‘Supermán’ López and Óscar Sevilla play, assured that Nairo Quintana, who has decided to look for a team to stay active , “has opened the doors” to sign for the Colombian squad.

“We waited two months for him with our doors open, when we offered him this opportunity to come to Medellín. This is a humble team, but with a big heart and a desire to run. Nairo is a great champion, a of the best or the best cyclist Colombia has ever had, along with Egan Bernal and others. I especially hope that he finds a team and that he continues to bring joy to us all”. Here he has a place and he can come whenever he wants,” the Medellín coach told EFE.

Velasques is waiting for an event but admits the team would take a giant leap if it could join López, Duarte, Sevilla and Nairo Quintana.

“With ‘Supermán’ López, Óscar Sevilla, Fabio Duarte and Nairo we could have a very strong team. We know Nairo’s ambitions and they are very respectable. The same thing happens with López, both are cyclists of a different level. It is a passing moment it can help them to continue to compete and have the illusion that they are going to train every day and that they can go back to racing in Europe in a World Tour team in the big tours,” he explained.

According to Velasques, the signing of Quintana “is not a question of money, but of Nairo who keeps hope for training”.

“Nairo and López need that illusion and have goals. Without a team and without a goal, it’s difficult to train,” he concluded.
