Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder has been sacked. The Schreuder era in Amsterdam came to an end after a seventh straight 1-1 draw with FC Volendam at home on Thursday evening.
Managing Director Edwin van der Sar described the decision as “Painful but necessary”. Assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach is also leaving Amsterdam.
Ajax are in fifth place in the Eredivisie, seven points behind leaders Feyenoord. Seven league games in a row were not won under Schreuder’s leadership. Ajax were also relegated in the group stage of the Champions League after a historic defeat against Napoli.

Even before the match, fanatical Ajax fans demanded that they bring white handkerchiefs with them. The shaking started in the fifth minute. Banners were hung in the box behind the goal for the coach to go.
“We are not sure that things will get better because of the points we lost and the game we showed,” said Van der Sar. “We pulled Alfred aside and told him it wasn’t from Ajax losing so many points.”
Van der Sar did not want to be biased and did not comment on Schreuder’s successor. “We’ll see how the band does tomorrow.”
