The works were found after a major search by the Carabineros Heritage Preservation agencies and were offered for sale to private collections in the United States by some art brokers.
The artifacts were confiscated from art dealers who did not have the necessary permits to sell them, and many were artifacts obtained from illegal excavations or raids on archaeological sites.
They even declared that these pieces could never leave the national territory, as required by the legislation on Italian artistic heritage since 1909.
“These 60 assets represent the looting of Italian archaeological sites, caused by ruthless smugglers for illegal gain. For too long they sat without property rights in museums, private homes and foreign galleries. Tracking down these criminals took years of diligent and strenuous investigative work,” the gendarmes said in a note.
