Federation of Olympic Committees Joins IOC to Restore Russian Athletes

ANOC, Association of National Olympic Committees, issued a statement in support of OK, International Olympic Committee’s statement in agreement with the readmission of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competitions.

Last Wednesday, the IOC recommended relocating these athletes for Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers under a neutral flag and if they meet a number of conditions, including “not actively supporting the war in Ukraine”.

The IOC director sees it this way: “No athlete can be prevented from participating because of his passport.”

The note issued by the international non-governmental organization explained:

We share the strong belief within the Olympic Movement that athletes should not be prevented from competing because of their passports and that a route should be explored for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to competition under strict conditions.

Further, they will stress that they recognize “that this is a sensitive subject and that this course and the strict conditions under which eligible athletes can compete must be weighed very carefully”.

Finally, they emphasized their support for the Ukrainian Olympic Committee and applauded the efforts of these delegations to enable the athletes of this country to continue their Olympic path.

ANOC remains in solidarity with the Olympic community and the Ukrainian Olympic Committee and appreciates the support of all National Olympic Committees3 to ensure that Ukrainian athletes can continue to train and participate in international events.
