‘Supermán’ López, national time trial champion in Colombia

Miguel Ángel López was crowned champion in the Road Cycling National Championship on Thursday by dominating the 43.5km time trial in Bucaramanga, the capital of the Colombian department of Santander, without major setbacks.

‘Supermán’ López (Team Medellín), recent winner of the 39th edition of the Vuelta a San Juan (Argentina), dominated his teammate Walter Vargas, who took the silver medal, while the bronze went to Rodrigo Contreras (Pact for Sport).

López continues to show that at the age of 28 and with a brilliant track record that includes two podiums in the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, he has the level to return to the World Tour.

Pesca’s, who scored 52 minutes and 59 seconds at the finish, took advantage of the challenges the route had for the climbers and confirmed his good form amid the scandal surrounding his departure from the Astana team for this season.

Vargas left a record of 53.11 and Contreras 55.07. Fourth place went to Diego Camargo (EF Education), who finished third last year and showed that he is taking shape for this season.

Due to mechanical problems, Daniel Felipe Martínez (Ineos), who arrived as favourite, was not able to show his best qualifications. The Cundinamarqués were looking for his fourth time trial title, after the gold medals won in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

The women’s senior champion was Lina Marcela Hernández (Colombia Pacto por el Deporte), while the sub’23 men’s title went to Germán Gómez (GW Shimano-Sidermec).

The National Road Race Championships bring together cyclists such as Nairo Quintana, Egan Bernal, Sergio Higuita, Esteban Chaves, Iván Ramiro Sosa, Brandon Rivera, Einer Rubio, Harold Tejada, Jesús David Peña, Winner Anacona and Dayer Quintana, among others.

Races continue this Friday with the women’s long-distance test on a 23.7-kilometer circuit through Bucaramanga in which runners complete five laps for a total of 118.5 kilometers.

Saturday will see the sub’23 race and Sunday will conclude with the elite professional race, which will have a ten-lap lap of the circuit totaling 237 kilometers.
