Vaqueros got off to a good start in the 2023 Caribbean Series

Colombia registered its first victory with Vaqueros de Montería in the Caribbean Baseball Series by defeating the ninth Puerto Rican Indios de Mayagüez 7-1 on Thursday.

Colombia won the last edition of the Caribbean Series with Caimanes de Barranquilla and has set itself the challenge this year to re-work the title with its new champion team.

Vaqueros went ahead in the third inning with a double by Gustavo Ángel Campero that pushed home Francisco Fernando Acuña.

Then, the Montería team increased its lead in the fifth part of the game thanks to a Jordan David Díaz home run that served for Acuña and Andrés Angulo to score runs.

It wasn’t until the sixth that the two teams had streaks, via another double by Acuña for Colombia, and a flyout through centerfield by Daniel Ortiz, which drove Vimael Machin from third base.

The Colombians sealed the victory in the final at bat with a double by Campero that brought in a run and a basesloaded walk awarded by pitcher Fernando Cabrera to Dilson Herrera.

The Montería team returns to the field on Friday to take on Panama from 12:00, while the Boricuas go for a first victory against the hosts, in a game that will be played at the end of the second day.
