Terminally ill spokesperson misses PSV’s best game against Feyenoord

The most important match to be played against Feyenoord next Sunday (14:30) is a side issue for PSV at the moment. The news came yesterday that spokesperson Thijs Slegers (46) is terminally ill.

“It felt like a sledgehammer,” said coach Ruud van Nistelrooij. “This news made everyone emotional. However, you have to deal with it very well. Think about what happened to Thijs, his family and loved ones… It must be so sad.”

Van Nistelrooij said he put Sunday’s best game at De Kuip into perspective. “Football is now the most important sideline.”

Slegers was hit with acute leukemia in 2020. He initially had a successful cell stem transplant and worked on PSV again. But yesterday the press secretary announced that the disease has returned and there is nothing the doctors can do for him.

Feyenoord fans announced yesterday that they want to support Slegers. In the 12th minute of the match, all spectators were asked to turn on the lights of their mobile phones.

Hundreds of donors following Sleger’s call

A call can be heard from Slegers for people to present themselves as stem cell donors or blood donors. 300 people filed complaints in the last 24 hours. The spokesperson said, “I am no longer being helped, but others can help!” said.

Slegers has been a spokesperson for PSV since 2015. He had a lot of contact with the cast and staff in this role. “Thijs is a colleague I work closely with,” Van Nistelrooij said. “He did that with the actors as well. There is a lot of communication with the actors and he discussed interview requests with them, for example.”

“Because he’s been at the club for a long time, a lot of people here know him well. His positivity and joie de vivre inspired us all,” said Van Nistelrooij. “And then comes this blow in an unprecedented order.”

actions instead of words

The day before the news about Slegers, PSV offices were still busy with the transfer market deadline.

The current Eredivisie number three will be hoping to welcome the departures of Cody Gakpo, Noni Madueke and Philipp Max alongside Thorgan Hazard and Patrick van Aanholt. The attacker, Fábio Silva, had also been caught before.

Van Nistelrooij was very happy with the substitutes. “They are good, fresh and fit.” However, Hazard and Van Aanholt will not be able to play for 90 minutes on Sunday due to the lack of rhythm in the game.

It will be a join or leave game for PSV. In Rotterdam, the gap with the leaders is four points. “Feyenoord, of course, is the favourite,” the PSV coach said resolutely.

The people of Rotterdam themselves do not (yet) express this ambition out loud. “Feyenoord is very humble,” said Van Nistelrooij. “Oh yes, not words, but actions, huh. What else will they do?”
