Kyrie Irving asked on Friday to trade the Brooklyn Nets ahead of the February 9 NBA transfer market deadline.
Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) and Shams Charania (The Athletic) briefed this Friday on Irving’s request to the Nets.
The basic player earns $ 37 million this season and is in his last year of contract.
According to Charania, Irving has told the Nets that if there is no trade, he will still leave the New York franchise in the summer as a free agent.
Irving has averaged 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season.
The 30-year-old point guard was called to form a terrifying trio in the Nets with Kevin Durant and James Harden, but expectations about this ambitious project fell far short of reality.
Between injuries, losses and other setbacks, Harden left Brooklyn for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022, while Durant, despite requesting the transfer last summer, ultimately decided to stay with the Nets.
NBA champion in 2016 with LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers, the 8-time All-Star’s career has been marked by major controversy, such as his refusal to get vaccinated against the coronavirus or his promotion of a movie anti-Semite (the NBA has sanctioned him five games for this latest controversy and Irving eventually apologized).
