The Nieuwpoort derby did not produce a winner in the major leagues. However, the defensive work of both Sven (Excelsior) and Lars Nieuwpoort (RKC Waalwijk) contributed to the lack of goals (0-0) against Woudestein.
The siblings have never met at the highest level, although they are 29 and 28 years old, respectively. They played together once and were relegated from the major leagues with De Graafschap.
Today, their clubs are in much better shape in terms of sports. Sven is thirteenth with Excelsior and Lars has even dreamed of a permanent place in left row after two back-to-back wins with RKC.
No third RKC wins in a row
The third win did not come as, among other things, Mats Seuntjens and Julen Lobete hit the pole only for Waalwijkers. Excelsior was also unlucky when Kenzo Goudmijn hit the post hard in the second half.
Check out Michiel Kramer and Redouan El Yaakoubi’s reactions here:
Neither team could force the opening. Reda Kharchouch was still nagging at a penalty when his head was blocked. Marouan Azarkan also tried to score a penalty, which caused a minor argument with RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen.
Excelsior vs. RKC also became a match between two veterans wearing the number 29 jersey. Mike van Duinen with hosts and Michiel Kramer with guests.
A flash from the latter was giving the RKC almost all the loot, but Stijn van Gassel was in the right place to fend off the rock-hard headshot. In overtime, Shawn Adwoye shot high for Waalwijkers from a promising position.
