The January transfer window turned out to be a disappointing and disappointing one for Swansea City.
No players joined the club, the only addition in the first month of the year being Morgan Whittaker, who returned to Swansea.com Stadium after a loan spell with League One leaders Plymouth Argyle.
Meanwhile, a total of six players have left SA1, with Michael Obafemi joining Burnley and Brandon Cooper and Jordon Garrick joining Forest Green Rovers.
Nathanael Ogbeta has been loaned to Peterborough United, while Armstrong Oko-Flex and Finn Stevens have been called up by West Ham United and Brentford respectively.
Russell Martin’s side are fading, to say the least, and Joel Latibodiere’s shin injury in the dramatic 4-3 loss to Birmingham City only adds salt to already open wounds.
The club’s owners will no doubt see the summer window as a more appropriate time to dive into the transfer market, but Martin has done more than feel what’s going on with the club this week.
There are a number of contractual issues that need to be resolved, with the likes of Ryan Manning and Joel Latiboder set to see their current contracts expire in the summer.
“From all of this, whatever happens, we have a great opportunity to do something now and learn from it,” said the head coach.
“I hope so and we also have big things to do before the end of the season and try to get some of our players to sign new contracts.
“It is a concern now that this window has implications for the summer window. The best way to mitigate this is to get some of our players to sign new contracts now, maybe try to do some pre-contracts for the summer with the free agents out there.
“We have some very important players who are out of contract, we have some very important players who still have one more year in the summer. Let’s not wait, let’s do it.
“Steven Benda, Ryan Manning, Joel Latibodir and Jay Fulton have a year until the summer, we have some young players who have shown incredible success that we need to protect and reward if we want to be a club. We really want to be and play with young players, they need to be rewarded when they do well, like Ollie Cooper did.”
There are also concerns about the future of Whittaker and Jamie Paterson, who could leave the Swans in January, and Martin admits that the latter is not currently part of his plans.
All that said, this is when all Swansea players are out of contract.
