The Olympic and Paralympic committees of the Nordic countries on Tuesday expressed their opposition to Russia and Belarus being re-admitted to the international sporting movement and participating in the 2024 Games in Paris.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened two weeks ago the possibility that Russian and Belarusian athletes can participate in international competitions under a neutral flag and as long as they have not “actively” supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The time is not right for these considerations, as nothing has changed in Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the Nordic committees state in a joint letter, which also includes the sports federations of the five countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland), sent today to various international organizations, including the IOC.
The signatories assured that they will work in “close dialogue” with the “relevant” stakeholders to assess the situation and also reaffirmed their support for the Ukrainian people and called for “peace”.
The Danish government had already positioned itself last week against Russian and Belarusian athletes who could compete in Paris under a neutral flag.
Other European countries such as Poland and the Baltic states have also opposed Russian and Belarusian participation, while the Ukrainian Olympic Committee has threatened to boycott the Games.
