“Work is progressing at a good pace and gives us confidence to reopen by the end of 2024 in line with President Emmanuel Macron’s goal,” Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak told AFP.
The date chosen is December 8, 2024, the Immaculate Conception, in accordance with the wishes of the religious authorities.
Before the fire, Notre Dame was one of Paris’ top tourist attractions, attracting some 12 million visitors a year. The 96-meter tower that crowns the transept of the cathedral was designed in the 19th century by architect Viollet-Le-Duc and in a fire on April 15, 2019, the entire lead roof of the temple collapsed.
This part will be rebuilt in the same way with the original materials: oak for the structure (500 tons) and lead (250 tons) for the lid and moldings.
For hygienic reasons, the use of lead during the rebuilding of the temple was a serious problem. The European Commission intends to ban its use.
France is “in full negotiation” with European authorities to keep this material. “The work complies with French regulations, which are among the strictest at European level,” says the minister’s cabinet. AFP
