Former Austria international Volkan Kahraman, 43, was killed in the middle of the street in Vienna on Wednesday after an argument with a man, who eventually committed suicide, Austria’s electronic press reported today.
According to the newspaper Kronenzeitung, the ex-footballer had a heated argument with another man in a cafeteria, who, as he went out into the street, drew a gun and shot him in the head.
The former midfielder, who was regarded as one of the great promises of Austrian football in the late 1990s, started his professional career at just 17 years old at Feyenoord Rotterdam.
Because he did not get a foothold in the Dutch club selection, he was transferred to Excelsior Rotterdam in 1998, also in the Dutch first division, where he played for three seasons.
After two successful seasons for Pasching, in the Austrian Bundesliga, Kahraman was called up to the Austrian national team, with whom he played three games in 2002.
Born in Vienna to a family of Turkish immigrants, the footballer retired in 2010 after playing for several years at Austrian lower-level clubs.
In 2017, Kahraman stood as a candidate for the Austrian People’s Party ÖVP in the parliamentary elections, although he was not elected as a deputy.
