United States President Joe Biden joined Tuesday in congratulating LeBron James, who became the leading scorer in NBA history by surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s legendary mark.
“LeBron, congratulations. With all your heart and soul you broke a sacred record,” Biden said in a video played on stadium screens during the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“You have taken this sport to the next level. And more than that, like Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Russell and others before you, you challenged and inspired the nation to get better, to do better and to fulfill its full promise.”
With 38 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder (he needed 36), LeBron broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s legendary record, current since 1989 with 38,387 points, placing it at 38,390 points, waiting for it to hold in subsequent games to rise.
LeBron, 38, paired this huge achievement with a spectacular career that included four NBA titles and four MVP honors.
In his 20th season in the league, LeBron continues to compete at an extraordinary level, averaging 30.2 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7 assists per game for the Lakers this year.
